Click Start, then choose Run. Enter ‘msconfig’ without the quotes at the prompt, and the System Configuration Utility will boot. The tabs allow you to control startup options, boot programs and edit various system config files. Just set the timer to 0 and you won’t get a wait during startup. Also try pressing Windows key and Pause/Break. Then choose Advanced, System Startup.

the xp bootloader is not compatible with windows 7,

best bet is install xp first, then install windows 7 as the win7 bootloader is backwards compatible

The best thing to do in this case is for you to reformat like the others have suggested and install a fresh copy of XP but if you have never done this it might throw you at first. With your machine on, stick in your copy of XP in then reboot. Then after it starts to reboot it will ask you “press any key to boot from CD” Press any key at this point and then wait for it to inspect your systems hardware then it will load some common drivers etc. After that it will look to see if you have any previous versions installed. When it shows you those other versions it will ask you if you want to continue installing Windows on this drive or something like that. At this point you want to get rid of the previous versions and any partitions. If you read carefully you can delete any other versions and/ or partitions and then install a fresh copy of XP. Make sure that you have gotten rid of all other OS’s and partitions and if you have it will say “to install on this partition press enter” and you should see “new(raw)” and then however many MB’s your drive is. At this point press enter and it will ask you “install XP NTFS or install XP NTFS(quick). Use the first one “install XP NTFS” Press enter and it will start to format the drive and then let it install XP and your all set.

as soon as you select to boot from windows….you will need to press F8 to bring up the selective startup options….

Another option is to edit the Grub to have a selection for Windows XP with Safe Mode….

How do I get windows to stop giving two options for selecting an operating system at startup?
I just purchased a used computer and had them remove the partition on the hard drive prior to taking it home. When I start the computer it gives me two options (two Windows XP’s) and asks which operating system I would like to use. It gives 20 seconds to choose or it chooses for you. Everything works well enough, but I am concerned. Is this indicative of a larger problem and how do I get it to stop?

does anyone know how to delete an operating system (windows xp) from a laptop?
I caught a virus on my laptop and had to reinstall windows. the first attempt wiped everything out but I had purchased a faulty disk and it was not complete. I purchased a new disk and it installed beautifully. Now I have two operating systems on my computer at the startup. Do you know how to delete the partial one and leave the whole one? It is on and emachine if that helps.

Safe mode (Windows XP) in dual boot.?
I have two operating systems installed on two partitions. Windows XP Professional and Fedora core 6. Grub bootloader is launched once RAM/HDD etc checks are over. Then I have to select which operating system I want to boot. My question is how do I start Windows XP in safe mode? Because as soon as I Select windows in multiboot, ‘default startup’ starts. Any ideas?

Multiple operating systems on one PC?
This is a pretty long explanation, so please bear with me.

I got a rootkit on my computer with windows XP. I deleted everything I could think of, ran all sorts of antivirus software, and tried anything else that anyone suggested, but the virus was still there.

So. I found my recovery disc and tried to reboot from CD, but it was unable to run it. So once the computer started up, my fiance was able to run it through the CD drive.

All that we wanted to do was wipe the computer clean and start over, but somehow there are now two operating systems to choose from at startup (XP Home and XP Professional, Home being the one that was there first) and all of the photos and personal files are gone, but some of the programs are still around.

If anyone can tell me how to delete everything from my computer so that I can just start over, I would be much obliged. It’s driving me insane.

Thank you so much in advance!

How do you switch between operating systems?
I installed Windows 7 on my C partition, and Windows xp Pro on F partition. But now my computer would only boot up windows xp Pro everytime I turned on my computer. Plus, when I go to system properties-advanced-startup and recovery-setting, under Default operating system, it would only show windows Xp Pro, but not windows 7? Why? I installed two operating systems. How do you How do you switch between operating systems?
