I prefer to use the Spybot search and destroy startup manger over msconfig. It provides more information and better control of how the startup is handled.

Start>All Programs>Startup: here, look for a dual set of Norton, delete one (it’s only a shortcut anyway.) -OR-
If only one appears, then perhaps it’s getting a second ‘startup’ instruction from the properties/options of the Norton itself. In that case, delete the startup folder shortcut.

may be u can use ccleaner to remove the item completely. U can get ccleaner completely free of cost. there u have lot of options like cleaning up your system, uninstalling unwanted programs and altering your computer startup menu. there u can delete startups permanently.

Possibly the ones that are starting up still are part of a virus?

They should stay unchecked when doing the steps that you have done.

Try unchecking them in Safe-mode and see if they do the same thing.

    Windows XP: startup in msconfig?
My pc was running slow on start-up, so i went to msconfig and the startup tab I then unchecked all unneeded programs for startup. After a restart, the programs were rechecked, this was done several times, with the same result. How can i keep these programs from running at startup or keep them from being rechecked? thanks for all who answer
    I did select apply afterwards.

Windows XP: in MSCONFIG/Startup i see some ‘Common Startup’ entries. Where can i find those on the computer?
I’ve searched in the registry, but that specific executables aren’t there to be found.
Also, i could not find a ‘Common Star’tup’ dir or filename.

I want to edit the NTFS-rights of the folder or key ‘Common Startup’, but that’s rather hard if that can’t be found ;) .

    PS:
Please, ONLY answer to my specific question and don’t be a wise guy telling me to do things differently.
I will report answers if they are not at least partly an answer to my question. Sadly i have to include this statement, because (in general) often only completely wrong answers (which don’t follow guidelines) are given.
